Dr. Scott Pike

Dr. Scott Pike is a graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry.  In 2006 he retired from private practice and is now an assistant professor at the College.  Scott has served as a volunteer and member of several local non-profit organizations.  He started his eye care project in Guatemala in 1997, and has visited the Ixcán once or twice a year since then.


Amanda Terhes is the co-director of the Close to the Customer Project at Oregon State University. In her efforts with OSU she works with students to conduct qualitative and quantitative research for external clients. While pursuing her Master of Arts in Applied Anthropology, Amanda worked with Enfoque Ixcán as an intern and focused her thesis work on the organization. Amanda and her husband, John, live in Eugene, Oregon with their two children and two cats.

Cyra Koupal

Cyra Koupal is originally from San Jose, California, and first became passionate about Latin America while living in Uruguay as a high school exchange student nearly 15 years ago. Since, Cyra has lived in Guatemala, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil, holds a Bachelor's degree from Tulane University in Latin American Studies and Brazilian Studies and is a graduate of the Healthcare Interpreter Program at City College of San Francisco. Cyra served as a human rights accompanier in one returned refugee community and conducted monthly visits to six communities containing witnesses in a legal case against former military dictator General Romeo Lucas Garcia in the Ixcán region of Guatemala from 2004 to 2005. Since 2007, Cyra has helped monolingual clients access necessary legal and social services by serving as a volunteer interpreter in the areas of family, immigration, bankruptcy and landlord/tenant law. Cyra has also trained new volunteer interpreters thus lending her expertise to ensure the growth of volunteer interpreter projects in San Francisco. Currently, she works as a freelance medical interpreter and is a student in the Spanish/English Legal Interpretation Program at San Francisco State University.

Dr. Debbie Billings is a researcher on women's health and rights, has worked throughout Latin America for over 20 years on issues related to family planning, migration, social justice and women's organizing. Debbie lived and worked in Guatemala during the early 1990s working with women's weaving cooperatives and then moved to Chiapas, Mexico where she conducted workshops with refugee women about their health. She also conducted life histories and wrote her PhD dissertation about women's organizing in exile. She, her husband and son currently live in Columbia, South Carolina.

Dwight Fleck has been employed in risk management for over 37 years as an analyst, manager and consultant. He has also served as a leader in a boys camping based program for over 20 years. For over 15 years he served as Treasurer and member of the Board of two churches.


Dr. Brian Arvidson graduated from Pacific University College of Optometry and completed a residency at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He has served as adjunct faculty at Pacific University, an attending physician at the Portland VAMC and has a full-time practice at Bend Memorial Clinic. Brian has traveled throughout Central and South America during undergraduate school and has been a member of the Enfoque Ixcán medical team since 2005. His wife and two sons enthusiastically support his medical mission endeavors and hope to travel with him one day.
